Journal of Medical Licensure and Discipline CoverAbout the Journal

In April 1915 the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, Inc., began publication of the Monthly Bulletin, the first regular publication since the Quarterly, which ceased publication after the first volume. The FSMB was unique in that it was the first group to publish the names of disciplined physicians in the Monthly Bulletin. Distinguished physician Walter L. Bierring, M.D., served as editor for an astounding 45 years, during which time he also served the FSMB as secretary and treasurer.

In 1920 or 1921 the name was changed to Federation Bulletin, and publication continued on a monthly basis. Spring 1993 brought a new, larger format; covers with bright, solid colors; a quarterly publication schedule and the addition of the cover tagline “The Journal of Medical Licensure and Discipline.” The Volume 85, Number 2 issue included a duotone photo as the cover background, signaling a departure from the bright colors of the previous five years. Beginning with the Volume 86, Number 4 issue, the tagline assumed prominence when the name was changed from the Federation Bulletin to the Journal of Medical Licensure and Discipline.

In 2004, the Journal was significantly redesigned inside and out, with new cover and interior colors, a two-column text format, a slightly larger and more readable body copy font, the inclusion of abstracts at the beginning of articles and justified text. Regardless of its name and cover design, the Journal of Medical Licensure and Discipline has long been recognized as an excellent source for articles on everything from the morality to the methods of medical licensing and regulation.
